Why Your Therapy Website Is Losing You Clients (And What to Do About It)

Heal & Grow Studio·June 2026·3 min read

You spent time on it. Maybe you even paid someone. It has your face, your bio, your services listed out. But the enquiries are not coming — or they come so rarely that your diary stays half-empty while you watch colleagues build waiting lists.

The problem almost certainly is not your practice. It is how your website is structured.

The moment that matters most

A potential client typically spends between 8 and 15 seconds deciding whether to stay on a page. In that window they are not reading — they are scanning for one thing: does this person understand what I am going through?

Most therapy websites open with credentials. Qualifications, modalities, years of experience. All of that matters — but it answers the wrong question first. The client is not asking “is this person qualified?” They are asking “is this person for me?”

The three things your homepage needs to do

Before anything else, your homepage needs to: make the visitor feel immediately understood, show them clearly what working with you involves, and make the next step obvious and low-risk.

Most therapy websites do one of these well. Very few do all three. If you want the full breakdown of which pages matter most, we cover that in The Five Pages Every Therapy Website Actually Needs.

The directory dependency trap

If most of your enquiries come through Psychology Today, Counselling Directory or a similar platform, you are renting your pipeline. The platform owns the relationship. Change their algorithm, raise their fees, or attract a competitor to your area — and your enquiries drop overnight. We go into this in more depth in The Psychology Today Problem.

A well-built website is infrastructure you own. It compounds over time. The practices we work with that invest in their own site consistently reduce their directory dependency within six months.

What to fix first

Start with your hero section — the first thing a visitor sees. It should speak directly to the client you most want to work with, name what they are struggling with, and give them a reason to keep reading. Then audit your contact process: how many clicks does it take to reach out? Every additional step loses people.

If you would like us to take a look at what is holding your site back, we build a free homepage mockup for practices we believe we can genuinely help. No commitment, no hard sell — just a clear picture of what your site could be.
